Fashionable Fundraising
NEW YORK—Timeless design emerges this month in the
Costume Institute's exhibition, "CHANEL," which is on view
from May 5 to August 7, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Kicking off this display of iconic fashions from Coco Chanel
to Karl Lagerfeld is the "Party of the Year" (also known as
the Costume Institute Gala), held on May 2. In its 57th year,
the sold-out fundraiser is co-chaired by Anna Wintour, editor
in chief of Vogue, Karl Lagerfeld, assistant director
of Chanel, and Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman.
In addition to lending to the costs of general operations of
the museum, the benefit also sustains the Met's curatorial
department that houses more than 75,000 costumes and
accessories from seven centuries and five continents and
annually supports three exhibitions.
"CHANEL" examines the thematic development of the work of
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel (1883–1971) and the revitalization
that Karl Lagerfeld brought to the Chanel line in 1983.
Included in the show are ideas, techniques and biographical
elements of Chanel's work. For more information, call 212.535.7710 or visit metmuseum.org.
